A look at forests through the optic of art and microarchitecture

The eighth edition of the biennial Manifestation Internationale de Champ Libre will be held from the 24th to the 28th of September 2008 within the framework of the Quartier International de Montréal (QIM). This year the central theme for the event will be the forest. The district of Montreal where the biennial will take place is characterised by its peculiar urban fabric, which includes an underground network linking many of the buildings in the area. Champ Libre is in charge of organising the event, which includes a number of art- and architecture-related interventions in the public space.

The Manifestation Internationale de Champ Libre will present 20 site-specific artistic installations and stagings related to architecture, digital art, video art, and performance. The aim is to provide a contemporary response to various kinds of intervention in public space, while also focusing on the unifying forest theme.

The Manifestation Internationale de Champ Libre will encompass five different areas of activity:

  • A central site where four major site-specific interventions will be presented. Two of these will be chosen based on an international call.

  • A secondary site featuring 16 interventions by artists. These projects, related to new media and architecture, will be chosen from submissions received in response to the international call.

  • The publication of a catalogue that will include the artistic interventions described as well as other interesting proposals submitted in the open call.

  • An international symposium for debate on art, architecture, new technologies and public space. The symposium will focus on the projects presented at the biennial and the QIM, and how these relate to the forest theme.

  • Creative workshops, guided tours, and meetings involving local and international participants.
