39th EDRA Conference in Mexico

The 39th International Conference of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) will be held in Veracruz (Mexico) from May 28 to June 1, 2008. The title of this year’s conference – Linking Differences / Defining Actions – highlights the need to explore how environmental design can be used to collaboratively solve common challenges and help link different subcultures based on the implementation of specific plans and the development of effective local strategies.

EDRA conferences are interdisciplinary forums that take a relevant, in-depth look at issues of interest to architects, psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, and other professionals involved in planning, design, research and teaching in connection with the built environment and related social, territorial and environmental processes.

The Environmental Design Research Association is an international multidisciplinary organisation of designers, researchers, educators, and other professionals involved in the design and management of the physical environment. Its mission is to advance and disseminate knowledge of the relationship between people and their surroundings, thereby promoting the creation of environments that are responsive to human needs on many levels.

EDRA 39 focuses on how, having recognised the cultural differences and contrasts in each society, we need to explore ways in which environmental design can be used to collaboratively solve common challenges and help link different subcultures based on the implementation of specific plans and tools and the development of effective local strategies.  The conference will analyse ways of taking on board different perspectives, proposals and opinions with a view to defining and applying strategies based on a participatory approach to planning – a process in which community participation, planning and design lead to sustainable surroundings.

Veracruz, the Mexican state where this important meeting will take place, has a rich natural and cultural heritage. The state is home to incomparable beaches, beautiful lagoons and rivers, and fascinating archaeological and colonial sites.
