Aim of the course Historic gardens can be viewed as open-air museums given that they reflect the culture and landscape of a particular period and place. However, the passage of time, inappropriate use, and interventions in these spaces can often lead to their deterioration. Projects aimed at expanding municipal green spaces often encompass the recovery of historic gardens for public use and actions aimed at restoring existing assets. Interventions need to be based on sound guidelines that respect and maintain the essence of these historic gardens and approach them as works of art. The course – directed at managers and specialists employed by city councils and gardening companies, architects, landscape designers, students of these disciplines, and anyone else interested in taking part – seeks to provide participants with the scientific and technical knowledge and background needed to undertake the task of restoring historic gardens.
