Workshop on photographing landscape with Bernard Plossu

The CDAN, in collaboration with the Huesca Art School, has organised a landscape photography workshop, which will be held in Bara (Huesca), in the Nocito Valley, on 4-6 April 2008. Bernard Plossu has won international acclaim for his work as a landscape photographer. He is currently working on a project that explores the identity of Huesca’s landscapes.

Plossu is particularly fascinated by the Sierra de Guara in the province of Huesca. His work involves going on walks that last several days to take photographs that reflect his interpretation of the territory. The aim of the project is to compile a photographic archive of approximately 250 images.

Plossu (Vietnam, 1945) discovered at an early age that he could only capture the geographical scale in small photographs. His work reveals a penetrating gaze, which, like a person walking, is always in movement. Plossu won the National Photography Prize in 1988, and a retrospective of his work was held at the Pompidou Centre in Paris the same year.

Plossu is a travelling photographer par excellence. For decades his nomadic spirit has driven him to wander the planet with an open spirit and an attentive eye. As Francesco Careri writes in El andar como práctica estética: ‘We could now construct a history of walking as a form of human intervention that contains the symbolic meanings of a fundamental creative act: wandering as the architecture of landscape, with landscape understood as the act of symbolic transformation – and not only physical transformation – of anthropic space.
