Berlin Biennial opens day and night from April 5

The 5th Berlin Biennial will open its doors on April 5 and run until June 15. The wide variety of activities planned for this two-month event will be divided in two basic parts: day and night. This major international exhibition of contemporary art, entitled When Things Cast No Shadow, is curated by Adam Szymczyk, director of the Basel Art Gallery, and Elena Filipovic. The 2006 edition of the event was a great success.

The city of Berlin is preparing to welcome different generations of artists from every corner of the planet for the 5th Biennial of Contemporary Art. Previous editions of the event have proven a success, with many critics ranking the fourth edition as the best exhibition of 2006.

The exhibition programme is non-stop, with both day and night components.

During the day works of art and projects created especially for the biennial by over 40 artists will be presented at three venues:

  • El KW Institute for Contemporary Art
  • The Neue Nationalgalerie
  • El Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum

At night various events will take place all over Berlin. By the light of the moon, in the night part of the biennial – Mes nuits sont plus belles que vos jours (My Nights Are More Beautiful Than Your Days) – artists and other thinkers will have a chance to exchange impressions, with interested members of the public also getting involved.

The event is a showcase for art, providing new artists with an opportunity to be discovered and rub shoulders with those have already made it.

A special publication has been prepared to facilitate understanding and interpretation of the event. Participants in the publication are artists taking part in the exhibition, curators, and writers of the calibre of Oksana Bulgakowa, Beatriz Colomina, Georges Didi-Huberman, Brian Dillon, and Pelin Tan.
