International Alvar Aalto Meeting on Modern Architecture

The 3rd International Alvar Aalto Meeting on Modern Architecture will take place on 30-31 August 2008 in the Finnish city of Jyväskylä. The event – under the title Building, Designing, Thinking – is organised by the Alvar Aalto Academy and the City of Jyväskylä. The meeting will bring together architects, educators, philosophers, art historians, sociologists and cultural theorists.

Over the course of the weekend meeting, participants will examine points of contact, influences and effects, interactions, correlations, and links between thinking, designing, and building.

The meeting will encompass a number of workshops:

  1. Translations from Concepts to Buildings will present some key issues to consider when executing an architectural project.
  2. Space for Thought will look at the close relationship between philosophy and architecture.
  3. Understanding Architecture will examine how architectural construction reflects society.
  4. In Thought Experiments in Muuratsalo the focus will be on the experimental house in Muuratsalo (Finland) designed by Alvar Aalto (1953).
  5. Architectural Expertise will consider the role of architecture in the development of knowledge.
  6. Architecture and Popular Taste will provide a forum for discussion and an exchange of views on the popular response to architecture.

All workshops will be conducted in English.
