Alberto Carneiro: Liçao de coisas

Liçao de coisas is a recently published monograph on the artistic career of Portuguese sculptor Alberto Carneiro. Carneiro, a winner of the Portuguese National Award for Sculpture, studied at the Porto School of Fine Arts and at St Martin’s School of Art in London.  Since 1963, when he started to exhibit, his work has evolved towards an intense relationship with landscape.

Liçao de coisas is a lavishly illustrated book. This is particularly important in view of the versatility of Carneiro’s work and his long career.

Since the 1970s, Carneiro has explored the way his work relates to nature. In the process he has created a complete aesthetic universe, designed by combining various experiences and possibilities offered by contemporary art: drawings, photographs, sculptures, installations, performances and interventions.

Bernardo Pinto de Almeida provides an overview of the artist’s work and contextualises it in terms of his experiences and the evolution of art over recent decades. Readers with an interest in contemporary art will learn more about how Carneiro gradually became more involved in Land Art and about relationships between aesthetics and the world of trees.

The publication is a recent one, so it includes photographs of the work Alberto Carneiro created in the natural environment of the Belsué Valley (Huesca) – Ás Árvores Florescem em Huesca (Trees Flower in Huesca) – which forms part of the CDAN’s Art and Nature Collection-Route. The book also includes photographs of the exhibition of Carneiro’s work that was held at the CDAN in 2006.
