Artists on the internet: Hamish Fulton

Hamish Fulton (London, 1946) has been labelled a conceptual artist.  The central notion of conceptual art, which emerged in the 70s, is that the essence of an artwork is an idea or concept rather than some physical object produced by an artist.

For 30 years Hamish Fulton has been going on walks around the world, camera in hand, guided by a simple statement of intent: no walk, no work.

Fulton’s work does not involve any intervention on the place represented; in it we can appreciate his excellent relationship with nature. His works combine text and images. Photographs are accompanied by explanatory texts that are the key to unlocking their meaning.

A web site to walk around in

A visit to Fulton’s web site (entirely in English) is the ideal way to find out more about the path he has followed and his creations. Interestingly, every time you enter the site the content changes. When you access the site, a sentence appears to welcome you. If you later re-enter, you will find a different sentence, a quirk that reflects the artist’s philosophy.

At the site, as in his work, it is the viewer who must pick out the path he wishes to follow: clicking on numbers from 1 to 60 reveals hidden images. The visitor must decide which number will be the starting point for his individual adventure. Those exploring the site can also follow links to information about the artist’s work, including images, collections, and works offered for sale. There is also a link leading to a biography of the artist and another that takes users to a page showing Fulton’s published books.

The web site is designed to get users to ‘walk’ around, just as Fulton has walked all over the world. The artist also uses the site to encourage viewers to engage with his work.
