Artists on the internet: Paolo Bürgi

This month the CDAN newsletter takes a look at the website of one of Europe's most acclaimed landscape architects, Paolo Bürgi, whose projects explore artistic values in relation to landscape.

Paolo Bürgi is currently professor of landscape architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). He has lectured at various universities in Europe and North America.

In 1977 Bürgi set up his own landscape architecture studio in Camorino, Switzerland. Since then he has executed a number of projects in different countries. His official website (www.burgi.ch) presents a selection of these, in most cases with detailed explanations and images.

Bürgi has received numerous honours, including the 2003 Rosa Barba European Award for Landscape Architecture for a project executed on the Cardada Mountain. Information about the project is given at the website.

Bürgi’s projects deal mainly with the design and planning of open space in connection with architecture in the public and private sectors. He is particularly interested in exploring artistic values through his projects.

The website is organised around a simple structure. The homepage presents a chronological overview of Bürgi’s professional activity up to 2004, set out in relation to X and Y axes.

The horizontal axis is labelled with a series of section headings for various professional activities: competitions, landscapes, gardens, publications, education and lectures. Links on the right allow visitors to access a profile of Bürgi, information on the awards he has received, and contact details.

Detailed information on many of the activities listed on the homepage can be accessed by clicking on links, while interesting photographs add to the visual appeal.
