Sonsbeek International Sculpture Exhibition

The 10th Sonsbeek International Sculpture Exhibition, entitled Grandeur, opened in Arnhem (the Netherlands) on the 13th of June. The exhibition, which seeks to involve society in art, will run until the 21st of September, with shows at three city museums.

Artistic director Ana Tolroe invited 28 prominent artists from all of the world’s continents to take part, asking that they use their works to give concrete expression to the aspiration to human grandeur. Through their sculptures the artists give form to drive, dreams, conflict and struggle, ideas linked to the effort that goes into achieving greatness on the human scale.

Residents of Arnhem carried the artworks through the city streets in a magnificent procession. In this way, Sonsbeek 2008 seeks to involve society in art. The procession served as a prelude to the official opening of the exhibition in Sonsbeek Park.

Enthusiasm for the exhibition extends far beyond the city limits of Arnhem. Museums and cultural institutions throughout the Netherlands are also contributing to Sonsbeek 2008 with their own projects.

Exhibition locations

The international exhibition is being held at:

  • the Museum for Modern Art Arnhem, which is presenting two exhibitions: Carried Away – Procession in Art and Cross Over;
  • Historical Museum Arnhem, which is hosting Sonsbeeld.10 x Sonsbeek and Art Route – A Walk along the Sonsbeek Past;
  • the Kröller-Müller Museum, which is showcasing a work by Ana María Tavares, entitled Crystal Waters
