São Paulo fills with art for the 28th Biennial

The 28th São Paulo Biennial of modern art – the most important Latin American plastic arts event – will be held in the Brazilian city from 26 October to 6 December.

The main aim is to raise awareness of modern Brazilian art. The director of this year's edition, Ivo Mesquita, wants to make this exhibition a biennial without artworks.

The São Paulo Biennial is an international exhibition of modern art that was created in 1951. The event is held every two years at the Cecilio Matarazzo Pavilion, located in Ibirapuera Park, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The pavilion – designed by a team of architects headed by Hélio Ochoa and Oscar Niemeyer – offers approximately 30,000 m² of exhibition space.

Curators Ivo Mesquita and Ana Paula Cohen have invited 40 artists of 20 different nationalities to take part.

Twenty-seven invited artists are currently working on projects for the exhibition: Alexander Pilis, Ângela Ferreira, assume vivid astro focus, Carla Zaccagnini, Carlos Navarrete, Carsten Höller, Dora Longo Bahia, Erick Beltrán, Fischerspooner, Gabriel Sierra, Goldin+Senneby, Iran do Espírito Santo, Javier Peñafiel, João Modé, Leya Mira Brander, Los Super Elegantes, Mabe Bethônico, Maurício Ianês, Mircea Cantor, Nicolás Robbio, O Grivo, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Rivane Neuenschwander, Rodrigo Bueno, Rubens Mano, Sarnath Banerjee and Valeska Soares.

Six artists have also been invited to give lectures on their respective projects and carry out activities with students of the FAAP art school.

Four special projects will run during the biennial:

1. ‘Archivo Abierto’ – Centro de Documentación de las Artes, Centro Cultural Palacio la Moneda (Santiago, Chile)
2. CINEMA CAPACETE (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
3. Ivaldo Bertazzo (São Paulo, Brazil)
4. Weightless Days (Ângela Detanico & Rafael Lain [Brazil], Megumi Matsumoto & Takeshi Yazaki [Japan], Dennis McNulty [Ireland]).

Artist Wagner Morales will be in charge of selecting videos to be screened during the biennial at the various exhibition spaces, including the library.
