Urban Development and Expo Zaragoza:
The Plan for Accompanying Measures

El urbanismo de la Expo: el plan de acompañamiento (Urban Development and Expo Zaragoza: The Plan for Accompanying Measures) presents readers with a report on the future. Zaragoza – a city proud of its past and committed to its future – comes together with humanity through projects structured around the theme of water. The catalogue includes a DVD and a map of the city.

This publication was created with the participation of numerous professionals and experts, co-ordinated by the Plan for Accompanying Measures Section of the Expo Zaragoza 2008 Consortium. Those involved include Víctor Pérez Escolano, Jerónimo Blasco and Javier Monclús.

Sustainable development – development that provides citizens with what they need to subsist and progress – has emerged as the major challenge of this century. Water and energy are essential for sustainable development and human progress.

This book is the calling card with which the new Zaragoza greets the world, a roadmap for the future of a bi-millennial city with deep cultural roots in the history of Europe.

The catalogue is divided into four sections:

  • ‘Expo+plan’ covers the plan for measures to accompany Expo Zaragoza, urban planning perspectives, and the use of expos as tools for urban transformation.

  • ‘Re-Ebro’ takes a look at the recovery of the Ebro River as a new public space.

  • ‘A-Verde’ focuses on the green belt, which plays a central role in the system of open spaces and the recovery of the Gállego River.

  • ‘Post-Expo’ examines the impact of the event on urban development and its legacy for the city.
