Michael Warren’s M-7 23 exhibited in CDAN garden

M-7 23, a sculpture created by Irish artist Michael Warren for the Garden of the Arts at Expo Zaragoza 2008, will be on display in the CDAN garden until 22 January 2009. The title of the sculpture refers to the artist’s initials.

Warren has created some of the most interesting public sculptures of the last few decades.

Michael Warren was born in Dublin in 1950and he completed his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Milano. Warren works in bronze, timber, stone, steel and concrete. He has created ome of the most challenging public sculpture of the last decades.

The title, M-7 23, is a cipher for the sculptor's initials: following the M, the numbers 7 and 23 represent the alphabetical order of the letters G and W -Michael George Warren. The work may thus be seen as a salute to the Irish designer and Modernist architect, Eileen Gray (1878-1976), with particular regard to her seaside villa, E-1027, built in 1929 at Roquebrune Cap Martin, in the south of France.

The nine modulated cubes that comprise the installation, like some hieroglyphic script, extend beyond their own space, encouraging the eye to read and delight in the infinity of visual possibility and formal computation that everywher imbues the greater environment.

No two of the cubic elements are exactly the same: sharp incisions and undercuts into rectilinear form combine to create a ritualistic, rotational dance of light and shade, form and space evoking an almost bodily sense of calm and grandeur. M-7 23 is a meditative work: an expression of the interaction of secular and sacred experience, it carries its own contemplative promise.
