Madrid to host 9th National Conference on the Environment

The 9th National Conference on the Environment will be held from December 1-5, 2008 at the Municipal Conference Centre in the Campo de las Naciones area of Madrid. CONAMA is an evolving event and a number of new elements will be added this year. The most important new developments for this edition will be the internationalisation of the event, a space for reflection, a benchmarking report on a key issue, and a special area for NGOs.

The National Conference on the Environment focuses on the need to take prompt action and act as quickly as possible on proposals that will contribute to improving the environment in our country.

This edition will include the participation of local and international bodies with relevant expertise, NGOs and environmental associations, and over 400 other social, political and business entities. In addition, a benchmarking report entitled Cambio Global: España 2020 (‘Global Change: Spain 2020’) will be presented at the conference. The report will highlight the need for urgent action in the near future to drastically change the behaviours and attitudes that are damaging our environment.

Detailed information on all events and calls initiated by participating institutions will be posted on the website of the National Conference on the Environment. The result will be an essential schedule of all sustainability-related events taking place in Spain.

CONAMA 9 will be attended by representatives of international organisations. NGOs and environmental associations will have their own specific space where they can present their actions and put forward issues for debate.

A special place for reflection has also been created. Acclaimed experts will give lectures and take part in talks and panel discussions, sharing their understanding of the theoretical framework that will shape the evolution of our society in the immediate future.
