CDAN to participate in art and nature symposium in São Paulo

Within the framework of a programme that includes four roundtable discussions, Teresa Luesma, the director of the CDAN, Laurent Le Bon, curator of the Centre Pompidou, and Felipe Chaimovich, the MAM’s curator of exhibitions, will address the theme ‘Contemporary Art and Nature: The Expansion of the Territory to Museums’.

The installation of works of contemporary art in parks and natural landscapes brings into question the identification between museum spaces and buildings. Despite a wave of museum construction projects, outdoor artistic action is gaining ground and overcoming the notion that museums must invariably be linked to architectural structures. The symposium will consider how museums can change their institutional practice and shake off their identification with buildings.

The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo is located next to the Ibirapuera Park, one of the city’s most frequented public spaces, with an average of 600,000 visitors every Sunday. In the area adjacent to the museum there is a sculpture park where works by acclaimed Brazilian artists are on permanent display. The aim of this project was to bring the collection to a wider audience and reflect artistic and social issues. The garden was established in the nineties thanks to the work of María Alicie Milliet de Oliveira (chief curator at the time), whose goal was to link the main buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer with routes displaying sculptures by contemporary Brazilian artists.
