Per Kirkeby : Louisiana 2008 (exhibition catalogue)

This publication is the catalogue for an exhibition of the work of Danish artist Per Kirkeby that opened at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark) on 2 September 2008 and will run until 25 January 2009. It includes a DVD that contains a 56-minute interview (with subtitles in English and German).

The exhibition takes a look at the artist’s work in painting and sculpture, and the catalogue also features texts that explore Kirkeby’s understanding of art. The exhibition includes 100 paintings – almost all of them large-format works, and most not previously exhibited in Denmark – 50 sculptures, and a number of pieces in different media.

The exhibition is curated by Eric Tojner, a leading expert on Kirkeby’s work, and aims to show the artist’s method and creative approach. The show also presents some of Kirkeby’s sculptural works, which also reflect his interest in nature. Some of his most interesting sculptures are to be found in European parks, including one in Louisiana.

Per Kirkeby has been selected to create the next work for the CDAN in the landscape of the province of Huesca.

The artist

Born in Copenhagen (Denmark) in 1938, Per Kirkeby is a sculptor, painter, filmmaker and writer. He studied geology at the University of Copenhagen and took an interest in art from an early age. In the seventies, his painting, initially influenced by Pop Art, was characterised by superimposed planes in which different figurative details can be seen. His approach changed over time, and his works came to focus on the expression of feelings, landscape, and the relationship between nature and culture.
