European capital stages first contemporary art biennial |
The first edition of the Brussels Biennial, which opened on October 19, provides the public with a chance to experience the latest trends in contemporary visual art. The biennial – under the title 7 exhibitions, 70 artists – will run until January 4. The event represents a major step forward in the integration of the European capital in the international contemporary art scene. |

Artists from around the world are taking part in the event, with participants from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany playing a particularly prominent role. Karla Black from Scotland, Josef Dabernig from Austria, and Annette Kelm from Germany are among those to look out for. Latin American artists represented at the biennial include Pablo Garber from Argentina, El Taller Popular de Serigrafía from Colombia, and composer Pedro Gómez Egaña. The event is being staged in four buildings, two of them abandoned, located along the railway axis linking the north and south of the city. It encompasses seven major exhibitions and a broad range of street activities. While the biennial is on, over 150 artists are showing their work at museums, art centres and free open-air exhibitions at sites around the city.
