Construction of work by Danish artist Per Kirkeby gets underway in Plan

In November construction work started on the next piece to be added to the CDAN’s Art and Nature collection-route, which already includes works by some of the most acclaimed contemporary artists on the international scene.

The artist selected to create the seventh addition to the route in the province of Huesca is Per Kirkeby of Denmark, who has created numerous works of public sculpture. The site is located in Plan, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, and the inauguration will take place in 2009.

Per Kirkeby is a multifaceted artist with a very strong background in the world of art. He was born in Copenhagen in 1938 and studied geology at the University of Copenhagen, but soon turned his attention to the art world. Kirkeby is a painter, sculptor, writer and filmmaker. He was a student at Denmark’s prestigious School of Experimental Art, where he declared his commitment to socially responsible art, artistic versatility, and a critical view of reality.

In the seventies Kirkeby started to create sculptures using an unusual material: brick. His constructions, which include doorways, vaults and other structures, constantly allude to the history of architecture and reflect the specific characteristics of the space where they are sited.

According to Javier Maderuelo, professor of landscape architecture at the Universidad de Alcalá, ‘Per Kirkeby’s works not only extend sculptural techniques to construction by appropriating brick, the most charismatic of architectural materials, they also allow viewers to enter his defunctionalised interiors.’

The Danish artist is the creator of major works of public art that have won international acclaim. Some of his most outstanding work has been executed for sculpture parks in Europe, including the Middelheimmuseum in Antwerp, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark), Skulptur Projekte Münster and Insel Hombroich (both in Germany), Kröller-Müller Museum (the Netherlands), Skulpturlandskap Nordland (Norway), Stiftelsen Wanas and Moderna Museet (both in Sweden).

The construction process has now started and the work will be inaugurated in 2009.
