Landscape and Territory [course proceedings] |
The CDAN has just published the proceedings for the third course in the ‘Thinking Landscape’ series. These specialised courses analyse the concept of landscape from the perspective of different disciplines. The 2008 course examined landscape in relation to the notion of territory. |

Right from the year it opened the CDAN has been strongly committed to education and research. Every June the centre offers a specialised course that considers landscape based on the conceptual framework provided by leading Spanish and international specialists, who offer insights into this topic from a broad range of perspectives. In 2006 the focus was on relationships between landscape and philosophy; the 2007 course concentrated on the intersection of landscape and art; and in June 2008 distinguished lecturers addressed the relationship between landscape and the notion of territory. The participants in this year’s course were Antonio Ansón, Enric Batlle i Durany, Fernando Castro Flórez, Ignacio Español Echániz, Josefina Gómez Mendoza, Yves Luginbühl, Javier Maderuelo, Neus Miró, Catherine Mosbach, Joan Nogué and Daniel Zarza. The course proceedings reflect the paradox we are now faced with: on the one hand, we are increasingly aware of landscape and the associated values identified by various disciplines. A growing sensitivity to landscape is spreading through society. At the same time, though, we are witnessing an irreversible deterioration of the territory we inhabit, which is being subjected to a range of harmful actions. These include coastal housing developments, urban sprawl, the abandonment of agriculture, residential occupation of the countryside, and the appearance of enormous elements of infrastructure that are unsightly and leave open wounds on the territory, damage that we find increasingly difficult to patch up. This book brings together a number of studies focusing on the terms landscape and territory, two powerful concepts, charged with meaning, which intertwine and become entangled, particularly when viewed in relation to a specific social, cultural and economic context. Both notions are examined from the viewpoint of different academic disciplines, and readers are offered an insight into the aspects of landscape that the territory possesses.
