Second Biennial of the Canary Islands: Architecture, Art and Landscape

The documentary stage of the Second Biennial of the Canary Islands: Architecture, Art and Landscape got underway last December. The event is a cultural gathering organised by the Government of the Canary Islands and held every two years. The biennial is directed by Juan Manuel Palerm, whose goal is to make the event and its content accessible to the public in order to popularise culture and raise awareness of the landscape and its consequences.

The first edition (held from 25 November 2006 to 10 February 2007) brought together over 72 artists from the Canary Islands, the Americas, Africa and Europe, as well as a significant number of architects, town planners and thinkers with similar aesthetic concerns.

The main objective of the second edition is to reflect on contemporary landscape from a critical standpoint that facilitates its interpretation and to contribute to creating a laboratory for ongoing research and analysis on the subject of Macaronesia and the Canary Islands archipelago in particular. The biennial also examines contemporary thought in relation to the concept of silence, an argument that is developed through the dialogue between two concurrent exhibitions.

The second edition of the event approaches landscape from the perspective of both production and consumption.

The Biennial of the Canary Islands consists of two stages:

·         Documentary stage: This stage, which began last December, includes the exhibitions From Pit to Peak and Territories of the Landscape, as well as an exhibition of biennial competitions.

·         Exhibition stage: This stage, which will take place in March and April 2009, consists of a series of activities designed to engage the public with the main themes of the Second Biennial of the Canary Islands. The exhibitions projects that will take place during this stage (grouped within a context called Silence) are: Immersions in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Scenes and Scenarios in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Workshop-Observatories and Landscape Schools at both locations.
