An exhibition of work by artist Herman de Vries will be held at the Kröller-Muller Museum in the Dutch village of Otterlo from 19 February to 7 June. The show is a retrospective of the Dutch artist’s work, which is closely tied to nature. Unity – Herman de Vries offers an insight into the wide range of techniques and methods employed by the artist over his long career. |

Herman de Vries was born in Alkmaar (the Netherlands) in 1931. He studied horticulture at Hoorn and worked as an agricultural researcher. Although active as an artist since 1953, he only devoted himself to art full-time from 1969. He composes his installations on wooden panels, using both objects taken from nature and photographs. Since 1970 he has lived in Eschenau, in southern Germany. De Vries articulates his personal vision by fusing nature, art and science. His use of natural materials reflects a great love of nature. One of the core notions underlying his work is the belief that nature requires nothing additional in order to be art. Unity provides viewers with an opportunity to see one of de Vries’ latest installations, a work entitled Mesa. This collage – made up of dozens of objects from around the world – is inspired by the collections of magical objects used by South American shamans in their rituals. The Kröller-Muller Museum recently acquired a number of works by the Dutch artist to add to previous acquisitions already in its collection. A new book written by the artist to accompany the exhibition is available at the museum. Source: texts, CDAN; photos provided by Comunication Department of Kröller-Muller Museum. |
