El paisaje en perspectiva histórica: formación y transformación del paisaje en el mundo mediterráneo

This publication is the outcome of a series of seminars on the development of territory and landscape held over recent years. The first seminar, held in Granada in 1999, established the methodological principles that were to guide a series of historical investigations on the subject. The results of the research conducted were presented at two subsequent seminars, one held in Lerida in 2001 and the other in Palma de Mallorca in 2003.

The publication contains the texts of some of the investigations presented at the three seminars, which in all cases seek to look at landscape from a historical perspective. These meetings were a continuation of other seminars in which historians, geographers, soil scientists and ecologists addressed various aspects of agriculture from an ecological and territorial perspective. The earlier seminars led to a number of publications.

The work analyses the historical development of landscape. Its main aim is to provide a basis for better understanding the contemporary landscape crisis and to identify principles for better territorial management.

Through a series of case studies, the authors examine the historical development of land use and plant cover, particularly shrubs and trees, which are regarded as fundamental factors that shape the landscape.

Some of the articles analyse the energy and material flows that are essential for landscapes to function, and others examine recent landscape degradation and its causes.

Examining how landscape has developed is a means of generating information about its historical functionality, which can be of great value when it comes to implementing the most suitable approaches to landscape management.
