Ponte de Lima International Garden Festival to get underway 29 May |
The municipal council of Ponte de Lima (in the North of Portugal) is organising an international garden festival that will run from 29 May to 31 October 2009. The theme of the fifth edition of the event is As artes no jardim (arts in the garden). The festival has gradually developed into one of the most important held on the Iberian Peninsula. |

Ponte de Lima, the oldest town in Portugal, was founded by the Romans in the region of Alto Minho, which shares a border with Galicia. Visitors will experience an event that brings together art and nature, the two elements at the heart of the international garden festival. The idea is to combine artistic creation and landscape in order to explore how imagination can be expressed within the parameters of a garden. Given that artistic activity in a natural setting is an ideal way to increase our understanding of and respect for nature, it’s hoped that the festival will help promote social and environmental balance. In 2009, the organisers have received over 67 submissions from 19 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. This international response highlights how important the festival has become for the global landscape design community.
