Jupiter Artland

Jupiter Artland, located less than 20 km from Edinburgh, is a park that showcases an important collection of contemporary sculpture. Thirty-two hectares of fields and woodland provide the setting for works by acclaimed and emerging artists, designed specifically with the landscape in mind.

The project got its start in 1999, when Robert and Nicky Wilson's passion for contemporary art led them to conceive the idea and acquire a historic manor house in Bonnington, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The fact that the new owners were familiar with the public art scene enabled them to gradually shape the new sculpture park.

All the work at Jupiter Artland is curated by the centre itself. Some of the most well-known artists represented are Ian Hamilton Finlay, Andy Goldsworthy, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Laura Ford, among others. The overall result reflects a strong connection between art and nature. The artworks fulfil their full potential in the landscape that surrounds them, with the passing of the seasons, and in relation to the changing conditions in their immediate environment.

Visitors to the park are given a map to find their way around, but the idea is not to impose any preset route. This approach reflects one of the underlying principles of the park: that those viewing the artworks should be free to discover, contemplate and enjoy each work and site. Visitors will need at least an hour and a half to take in all the works at Jupiter Artland.

The centre offers an artist-in-residence programme and an educational service for all ages, with particular attention to school groups. The park also boasts a café and a shop.
