Lausanne Jardins 2009 gets underway

The Swiss city of Lausanne will soon be hosting the fourth edition of Lausanne Jardins, a show dedicated to the art of contemporary gardening in an urban setting. The event is organised by the Association Jardin Urbain. From 20 June to 24 October, visitors to Lausanne will find a public space extending from the upper part of the city to the shore of Lake Geneva – 30 projects that combine contemporary art and nature, executed by internationally acclaimed landscape architects.

These interventions in the urban landscape invite us to discover the city’s lesser known corners and showcase a good deal of its rich natural heritage.

The 30 gardens to be created for this edition will make up four different routes, offering visitors a chance to stroll from the heights of Lausanne to the lakeshore. The opening of the M2 metro line – a north-south route that profoundly alters the perception and uses of public space – is of particular significance in relation to these pathways. This new development explains the title of this year's edition: ‘Jardins dessus dessous’ (‘Gardens above and below’).

The projects presented within the framework of Lausanne Jardins reflect this new reality. Thus the four proposed loops are located along the axis of the new underground line. This new element of the city’s infrastructure offers visitors a fifth way to explore public space, through the creation of a milieu that will accompany travellers and visitors as they move from place to place beneath the surface.

In addition to the gardens on display, the organisers have planned guided tours, complementary exhibitions, lectures, and a range of activities to liven up the event.
