Estuaire 2009: art and nature on the banks of the Loire

From 5 June to 16 August, the estuary of the Loire River, between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, will provide the backdrop for works by leading contemporary artists and landscape architects.

Along the 60-km stretch of riverbank, visitors will find 30 works that relate art and nature to the environmental, industrial and cultural heritage of the Loire Valley.

As in the first edition of the event (held in 2007), Estuaire 2009 offers an opportunity to discover works distributed along a route that runs from Nantes to the mouth of the Loire at Saint-Nazaire. High-profile artists and landscape architects such as Daniel Buren, Tadashi Kawamata and Gilles Clément will be taking part in this edition and have been assigned specific riverside sites by the organisers.

Landscape installations are executed in situ, either outdoors or in places with a particular connection to art or to the region’s natural and industrial heritage. Each work invites us to discover or rediscover the framing landscape from different perspectives, in the midst of an extraordinary environment.

Together the works create a route dedicated to art that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Nearby car parks are also available for those who prefer to drive. Guided bus tours are another way to discover the river and its landscapes.
To complement this art and nature exhibition, Estuaire 2009 will be offering many activities aimed at entertaining and informing visitors. Cultural centres in Nantes and Saint-Nazaire will also be participating in this creative efflorescence.

The previous edition of the event (Estuaire 2007) received 760,000 visitors.
