Art Basel show turns 40

The 40th edition of Art Basel, the world’s premier international art show, will be held from 10 to 14 June 2009. A number of projects that showcase public art in an urban context will be presented in the exhibition square. This year visitors will be able to see works by over 2500 artists, represented by 300 galleries from around the world.

The fact that these 300 galleries were selected from among 1100 candidates underscores the importance of the show.

In addition to a general area for galleries, Art Basel offers the following sections:

  • Art Unlimited. This section presents 60 works that don’t fit in standard display booths, including large-scale sculptures, wall paintings and more.

  • Public Art Projects. Most of the public-art projects included in this section are created in situ in the exhibition square. The aim is to invite people to enjoy works created for the urban context and to encourage interaction with the public.

  • Art Statements. Up-and-coming galleries present works created especially for this edition by 27 emerging artists. Two prizes will be awarded for projects in this section.

  • Art Premiere focuses on the conceptual aspects of the work done by galleries. This year the section will present 19 projects that explore intergenerational dialogue between artists or feature exceptional art historical material.

  • Il tempo del Postino, is the world’s first opera created by visual artists. The show will be performed at Theatre Basel.

  • Art Film. A programme of art-related films.

Professionalisation of the sector at Art Basel

Art Conversations and Art Lobby merit special attention. These sections feature interviews with artists, roundtables and discussions:

  • Artistic Production. Collecting Performance.

  • The Future of the Museum. Digital frontiers.

  • Public / Private. Institutions. A time of crisis... and opportunity?
