Manuel by Per Kirkeby |
Manuel (‘manual’ in English) is an essential work for understanding Per Kirkeby’s artistic experience. Published in 1998 in conjunction with the exhibition Visions du Nord (held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris), the book discusses aspects of architecture, painting and sculpture that come together in the work of the Danish artist. What makes Manuel such an important work is the insight it provides into how Kirkeby has been influenced by geology and his experience of nature over his artistic career. |

As the author himself explains in the preface to the book, readers of Manuel shouldn’t expect a logical discourse or an explanation of the grounding of concepts or theoretical artistic methods. Instead, Kirkeby offers his thoughts on architecture, sculpture and painting, and discusses the personal and aesthetic experiences that have taken him in one direction or another over the course of his long artistic career. By way of example, one text offers an insight into the philosophy that led the artist to use brick as a material for creating sculptures, and in another Kirkeby offers his thoughts on different artists, from Munch to Warhol. As they explore the pages of this manual, readers will notice the frequent references to nature, both implicit and explicit. Details:
