Venice Biennale open until November

The 53rd edition of the Venice Biennale, entitled Fare mondi (Making Worlds), got underway on 7 June. The Giardini and Arsenale venues and other sites in the area around the city will showcase works created by over 90 international artists. The event will run until 22 November.

This exhibition of contemporary art, directed by Daniel Birnbaum, is not divided into sections. The title of the biennial reflects a desire to put the spotlight on the process of creation. The underlying idea is that a work of art expresses a vision of the world which, when analysed in a serious way, becomes a way of constructing the world.

The show will encompass a broad range of artistic forms – installations, video, sculpture, performance, painting and design – and present works that express the aspiration of exploring the world we live in. The Giardini (50,000 m2) and the Arsenale (38,000 m2) are the two main spaces where the biennial takes place. In the Giardini, the historic Italian Pavilion – now renamed Palazzo delle Esposizioni – offers a range of facilities in addition to exhibition spaces, including a new library, coffee-bar, and spaces for educational activities – designed by three of the participating artists.
