Fondation Pierre Gianadda

The Pierre Gianadda Foundation is located in Martigny, a city in the heart of the Swiss Alps, dominated by the mediaeval Batiaz Tower.

The cultural centre, which opened in 1978, was founded by the engineer Leonard Gianadda, who in the spring of 1976 discovered the ruins of an ancient Gallo-Roman temple, the oldest of its type in Switzerland. Soon after his discovery, following the death of his younger brother, he decided to create a centre dedicated to archaeology and the arts, music, and modern and contemporary culture.

The centre includes a sculpture park, temporary exhibitions, the Franck collection, and a Gallo-Roman museum.

The centre is built around the ruins of the ancient Roman temple. Permanent works by modern artists – including Maillol, Chillida, Henry Moore and Jean Arp – have gradually been added in the gardens.

The Foundation also holds the permanent collection of Louis and Evelyn Franck, which includes works by Cézanne, Van Gogh and Picasso, among others. The quality of temporary exhibitions has always been outstanding, since the first shows were staged in the 1980s right up to the present. Three or four exhibitions are held each year to showcase the work of such acclaimed artists as Goya, Manet and Kandinsky. The current exhibition From Coubert to Picasso will run until 22 November.
