José Beulas retrospective at the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza

From 24 October to 31 January the Beulas Foundation’s Centro de Arte y Naturaleza will host an exhibition entitled Broadening Horizons. The show presents work executed by Catalan-Aragonese artist José Beulas over the course of a 70-year career. This comprehensive retrospective showcases an artist who has made landscape absolutely central to his work.

Beulas’ painting has become progressively more uniform as it moves ever closer to the essential. His depictions of nature contain the emotion that the natural world evokes and reflect on synthetic nature as manifested in landscape.

His contribution to the history of Spanish painting is reflected in 53 landscapes selected from public and private collections. These paintings are presented along with extensive documentation, including drawings executed when he was studying at the academy, sketches, letters, texts, publications, and works by other artists who were represented in José Beulas’ private collection, now the CDAN collection. This will be the first time some recently documented works, including pieces by Juan Gris and Francis Bacon, have been exhibited to the public.

Over a hundred black-and-white shots included in the show offer an intense, comprehensive and unique look at photographs taken and developed by José Beulas, a painter who uses his camera only to capture the intensity of the landscape, without any artistic intent, but who is nevertheless capable of conveying a distinctive, individual view of Huesca’s landscape.

Beulas has always been grateful for a grant he received from the Huesca City Council and the Huesca Provincial Council, which enabled him to pursue fine arts studies in Madrid and Italy. This sense of gratitude is what led him to generously donate his collection and property. For the first time, the public will be able to visit the studio of García de Paredes, built in the 1970s, and see the garden designed by José Beulas.
