8th International Sculpture Symposium in Liechtenstein

The 8th International Sculpture Symposium will be held on 15-18 October in Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein. ‘Sculpture and Architecture: An Ambivalent Relationship’ is being organised in cooperation with Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Hochschule Liechtenstein, Zeppelin University and Foundation Sittertal.

The difference between architecture and art lies not in their means of creative expression but in their initial methods. Sculptors can design bridges and architects can create sculptures.

The aim of this symposium is to bring these two disciplines closer together through a series of debates and presentations involving sculptors, architects and engineers. The University of Liechtenstein’s Institute for Architecture and Planning and its students will also take part in the symposium.

In parallel with the symposium, artist members of the Sculpture Network are invited to present their work by showing catalogues, slides, films, etc.

The symposium will also include guided tours of different art departments of Foundation Sitterwerk, including the Art Library, which holds a collection of approximately 25,000 books on art, architecture and history, and the ‘raw materials archive’ a comprehensive collection of materials.

To wrap up the event, there will be a visit to the 4th Swiss Triennial Sculpture Festival, Bad RagARTz 2009, where 79 international sculptors are showing close to 400 works.

List of speakers:

  • Jürg Conzett: Professor at the Technical University ETH Zürich.

  • Gloria Friedmann: Sculptor.

  • Christian Kerez: Architect and Professor of Architecture and Planning at the Technical University ETH Zürich.

  • Rita McBride: Sculptor and Professor of Sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

  • Ulrike Shepherd: Curator of artsprogramm, Zeppelin University.
