11th International Istanbul Contemporary Art Biennial

The 11th International Istanbul Contemporary Art Biennial opened on 12 September and will run until 8 November. The biennial is regarded as one of the most important in the world, along with those held in Venice, São Paulo and Sydney. The aim is to open up a dialogue between artists and the public through the works exhibited at the event.

The Istanbul Biennial was first held in 1987 and is organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. The aim is to bring together artists from many different geographical areas and others involved in the contemporary art world, such as critics and curators. It also plays an important role in promoting artists.

Past editions of the biennial have always had a single curator but this year’s edition is under the curatorship of WHW (What, How and for Whom). Members of the organisation include curators Ivet Ćurlin, Ana Dević, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović, and designer and publicist Dejan Kršić.

For this year’s biennial – given the thematic title ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive?’ – the organisers have selected over 120 projects by 70 artists from 40 different countries.

In parallel with the biennial, a number of exhibitions of photography and paintings will be held at venues in and around Istanbul. Visits to the biennial will also be organised for children and university students.
