4th European Landscape Conference

The 4th European Landscape Conference will be held in the French city of Strasbourg on 26-28 October. The conference, organised by the French Federation of Landscape Architects, will include a symposium, a forum, and a series of workshops.

The objective of the conference is to generate debate and reflection among participants from France and other parts of Europe.

The symposium ‘Sustainable Development: Does it Have a Form?’ is scheduled to take place on Monday 26 October and will be chaired by journalist Bertrand Tuerce. The focus will be on the new landscape aesthetics generated by sustainable development in relation to the recommendations of the European Landscape Convention.

The ‘Green City’ Forum, a European landscape project, will take place on Tuesday 27 October. Green City is a European civic-minded approach that aims to make cities better places to live, where green spaces ensure improved quality of life for residents.

Finally, on Wednesday 28 October a number of mobile workshops will be held and there will be a series of visits to sites near Strasbourg. These trips will provide participants with an opportunity to see how the theses set out during the first two days of the conference stand up in light of real experiences on the ground. One of the destinations will be the Vauban district of Freiburg (Germany), a former French military base that has now become a sustainable model neighbourhood. Vehicles are banned from the area, and people get around on foot or by bicycle. There will also be visits to the Strasbourg botanical garden, the city's eco-districts, and the Gardens of Bitche (Lorraine).
