Poznań 16th International Sculpture Triennial

The 16th edition of the Poznań International Sculpture Triennial – entitled ‘The Crisis of the Genre’ – got underway in the Polish city on 3 October. Ninety leading international artists will exhibit their works at the triennial, a not-to-be-missed event for anyone interested in sculpture. The triennial will run until 11 November.

Sculptures will be exhibited in the monumental interiors of the Zamek Culture Centre. The history of the triennial goes back over 30 years, and this year's edition will be curated by Robert Sobociński, who is himself a sculptor whose work has been shown in various countries.

This year's edition of the triennial encompasses four international collective exhibitions and a solo showing of work by Francesco Marino Di Teana, the well-known sculptor, architect and philosopher. The exhibitions are:

  • Marino Di Teana. Architectural and Monumental Sculpture: An exhibition that demonstrates the versatility of the artist’s work. The show includes drawings, plans and sculptures.

  • Contemporary Sculptors and Their Galleries: Curated by art historian Laurence d’Ist, who has invited 24 recognised European sculptors to contribute, including Nicolas Alquin and Axel Cassel.

  • The Unfinished Exhibition: Dedicated to the memory of Olivier Billiard, who was invited to curate one of the exhibitions for the triennial but died while working on the project. Billiard’s wife, Boýena Chodorowicz, took over her husband’s role. The exhibition presents the work of eminent French sculptors, including Vincent Batbedat, Guy Ferrer and Denis Monfleur.

  • The competition exhibition: This show features works chosen at the end of June by the Artistic Council, including pieces by artists from Poland and abroad.

  • Personalities of Contemporary Sculpture: This exhibition, curated by Robert Sobociński, will show pieces by 20 acclaimed artists, many of whom have contributed to previous editions of the triennial.
