10th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art

Since 16 September the French city of Lyon and nearby communities have been flooded with works created by over 60 artists from around the world. Under the title ‘The Spectacle of the Everyday’, the aim of the Biennale de Lyon is to invite people to think about the why of art. The event will run till 3 January.

This year's edition of the Biennale de Lyon, an event first held 20 years ago, is curated by Hou Hanru, who was also responsible for the 2007 Istanbul Biennale and others held in Shanghai, Tirana, Guangzhou and Gwangju over his lengthy career.

Two of the nearly 70 artists taking part in the event – Eulalia Valdosera and Dora García – are from Spain. Participating artists have oriented their works around five pillars: The Magic of Things, Celebrating the Drift, Living Together, Another World is Possible, and Veduta.

‘The Magic of Things’ is made up of the work of artists who orient everyday objects and situations towards new horizons to raise social, historical and political questions.

‘Celebrating the Drift’ focuses on artists who participate in urban spaces and create forms of art that resist order and spatial constraints.

‘Living Together’ explores the dialogue between the city and its communities.

‘Another World is Possible’ gives the floor to artists who take a critical look at reality.

‘Veduta’ invites artists to reside in outlying neighbourhoods where many local residents are immigrants and have witnessed historical events.
