Exhibition of work by Jorge Barbi at the MARCO de Vigo

The sentence ‘I'm lost, don't hold me back’ greets visitors as they enter the Vigo Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO de Vigo) to see an exhibition of work by artist Jorge Barbi. 41º 52’ 59” Latitude N / 8º 51’ 12” Longitude W is based on the idea of the path, the walk, and on everyday observation of nature and its mutations, themes reflected in a vast archive the artist has built up over time. The show will run until 14 February 2010.

The MARCO de Vigo opens its autumn season with a major solo show by Jorge Barbi. Curated by Juan de Nieves, the exhibition is a coproduction with Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and the State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad (SEACEX).

Jorge Barbi’s trajectory is one of the most interesting to be observed on the art scene over the last twenty-five years. Some of the constants in his work are a concern with the passage of time, objects and their context, the form-content dialectic, and the mechanisms of perception.

The title of the exhibition, 41º 52’ 59” Latitude N / 8º 51’ 12” Longitude W, refers to the geographical coordinates of the area where the artist makes his daily walks. The show brings together a number of photographic series produced in recent years, together with a selection of earlier works, pieces created specifically for this exhibition, and recently produced works.
