Portscapes: art projects in Rotterdam

Portscapes comprises a series of public projects set in motion by the Port of Rotterdam Authority with the advice and support of SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Space, Amsterdam) and curated by Latitudes. Work on the initiative has been underway throughout 2009, and participating artists include Jan Dibbets and Lara Almarcegui.

Portscapes explores the Rotterdam’s architectural, political, social and ecological past, present and future, the goods imported and exported, trade activity, and the generation of energy. Portscapes is taking place in parallel with the construction of Maasvlakte 2 (MV2) in Rotterdam, which involves the extension of what is already Europe’s largest port and industrial zone. Construction work began in 2008 and will continue until 2013. The MV2 project will recover 2000 hectares of land from the sea.

During Art Rotterdam (5 to 8 February 2009) Portscapes distributed a preliminary publication designed by Ben Laloua and Didier Pascal, with contributions by Jorge Satorre, Paulien Oltheten, Maria Barnas and Erick Wesselo, among others.

The projects will be presented at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam from 5 February until the end of March 2010.
