Landscape and History [proceedings]

The texts presented in this book correspond to the lectures given in ‘Landscape and History’, the fourth course offered by the CDAN within the framework of the Thinking Landscape series.

This publication presents a number of studies focusing on the terms landscape and history, two powerful concepts, loaded with various meanings, which intertwine and become entangled, particularly when defined in the context of a specific society, culture and economic situation. The concepts are examined from the perspective of different disciplines in analyses that shed light on the processes by which land has become landscape.

The course brought together some of Europe's leading lecturers to raise awareness of the different approaches being pursued by historians in their attempts to narrate the evolution of landscape and to offer insights into issues that link landscape and history. The scholars involved are responsible for producing the landscape histories now appearing.

The texts are ordered in a way that allows readers to start with the most general and methodological aspects and proceed to more specific topics.
