ALTANA Kulturstiftung: an exhibition space committed to the dissemination of art and nature

The Altana Cultural Foundation focuses its activity on art and nature. One of its goals is to develop a social awareness of the importance of both of these elements and encourage a responsible attitude towards nature through a dialogue with art.

The foundation is located in Sinclair Haus, in the German town of Bad Homburg. The building has been converted into an exhibition space for the foundation, which each year offers four or five exhibitions featuring contemporary artists who combine art and nature.

The centre’s collection includes over 600 works by some of the most important creators in this field. Artists represented include David Nash, Axel Hütte, Ricardo Calero, Andy Goldsworthy, Per Kirkeby, Wolfgang Laib, Herman de Vries, and Giuseppe Penone – to name just a few.

The works approach nature using different artistic techniques – painting, sculpture, photography, etc – reflecting an emphasis is on the meaning embodied in the works rather than the means used to convey it. An annual presentation based on the collection is dedicated to different unifying themes, such as the four natural elements or the micro- and macro-cosmos.

Educational programme

Educational activities are another of the central pillars on which the foundation’s project is based. The centre works closely with kindergartens, schools and universities to educate children and adults about the relationship between culture and nature. For children, the foundation offers a range of workshops within the framework of school visits and special programmes for holiday periods.

ALTANA also promotes regular encounters with artists and collaboration with other disciplines such as literature and music. These initiatives are aimed at raising awareness of nature in a way that appeals to all the senses.
